Foreword:

Inourlives,weallhavephotographsthatholdaspecialplaceinourhearts.Theycaptureamomentintimethatwewanttorememberforever.ThephotographIamabouttotellyouaboutisonethathasbeenwithmeformanyyears.Itisaphotographofmygrandfather,whomIneverhadthechancetomeet.MygrandmothergaveittomewhenIwasachild,andovertheyears,ithasbecomemorethanjustapieceofpaperwithanimageonit.Itisawindowintoatimethatnolongerexists,areminderofamanwholivedandloved,andasymboloftheimportanceofmemories.

Paragraph1:

Thephotographisoldandfaded,buttheimageitcapturesisstillclear.Init,mygrandfatherisyoungandhandsome,withamischievoussmileonhisface.Heiswearingasuitandtie,andhishairisslickedback.Hiseyesarebrightandfulloflife,anditisclearthatheisenjoyinghimself.

Ihavealwaysbeendrawntothisphotograph.PerhapsitisbecauseIneverhadthechancetomeetmygrandfather,orperhapsitisbecausetheimageissovividandcompelling.Whateverthereason,Ihavespentcountlesshoursstudyingthephotograph,tryingtogleanasmuchinformationasIcanaboutthemanitportrays.

Mygrandmotherusedtotellmestoriesaboutmygrandfather.Shewoulddescribehimasadventurous,fun-loving,andkind-hearted.Shewouldrecounttalesoftheircourtshipandtheirearlyyearsofmarriage,paintingapictureofamanwhowasdeeplyinlovewithhiswifeandhisfamily.

Paragraph4:

ButasIgrewolder,Ibegantorealizethattherewasmoretothestory.Mygrandfatherhaddiedatayoungage,leavingmygrandmothertoraisetheirchildrenalone.Sheneverremarried,andshespenttherestofherlifehonoringmygrandfather'smemory.

Paragraph5:

Ibegantowonderaboutthecircumstancesofmygrandfather'sdeath.Iknewthathehaddiedinacaraccident,butbeyondthat,Ihadnoinformation.Mygrandmotherwasalwaysreticenttotalkaboutit,andasIgotolder,Ididn'twanttoupsetherbypressingfordetails.

Butthephotographremainedaconstantsourceoffascinationforme.ItwaslikeapuzzlethatIcouldn'tquitesolve.Iwantedtoknoweverythingaboutthemaninthepicture,tounderstandhislifeandhisdeath.

Yearspassed,andIgrewup.Iwenttocollege,gotajob,andstartedafamilyofmyown.Butthephotographneverlostitsholdonme.Itwaslikeatalisman,remindingmeoftheimportanceoffamilyandthefragilityoflife.

Andthen,oneday,somethingunexpectedhappened.IreceivedaletterinthemailfromawomannamedSusan.SheexplainedthatshehadfoundthephotographinanantiqueshopinasmalltowninIndiana.Shehadrecognizedmygrandfather'sfacefromanotherphotographthatshehadseen,andshehadfeltcompelledtotrackdownhisfamily.

Paragraph9:

IwasastonishedbySusan'sletter.Itseemedlikefatehadintervenedtobringthephotographbackintomylifeafteralltheseyears.

Paragraph10:

IcalledSusanandwespokeatlengthaboutthephotograph.Shetoldmethatshehaddonesomeresearchandhaddiscoveredthatmygrandfatherhadbeendrivinghomefromabusinesstripwhenhewaskilled.Shealsotoldmethatshehadfoundanotherphotographofhim,takenjustafewweeksbeforehisdeath.

Susanofferedtosendmetheotherphotograph,andIeagerlyaccepted.Whenitarrivedafewdayslater,IwasamazedbywhatIsaw.Inthesecondphotograph,mygrandfatherwaswithawomanwhowasnotmygrandmother.Theyweresmilingandholdinghands,clearlyinlove.

AsIwasleavingthecemetery,somethingcaughtmyeye.Therewasasmallflowergrowingnexttotheheadstone,abrightsplashofcoloragainstthegraystone.Itwasadaisy,mygrandfather'sfavoriteflower.

WheneverIlookatthephotographnow,Iseenotjustmygrandfather,butalsomygrandmother,myparents,mychildren,andmyself.Iseeafamilythathasenduredhardshipsandchallenges,butthathasalsofoundjoyandhappinessineachother.

AndIthinkaboutthewomaninthesecondphotograph,theonewhowasnotmygrandmother.Iwonderwhoshewas,andwhatherstorywas.Ihopethatshefoundhappiness,too.

Butmostofall,Ithinkaboutmygrandfather.Ithinkaboutthemaninthephotograph,withhismischievoussmileandhisbrighteyes.Ithinkaboutthelifehelivedandthelegacyheleftbehind.AndIamgratefulforthememoryofhim,andforthephotographthatkeepsthatmemoryalive.
